Gender refers to the characteristics of women, men, girls and boys that are socially constructed. This includes norms, behaviors and roles associated with being a woman, man, girl or boy, as well as relationships with each other. As a social construct, gender varies from society to society and can change over time." We live in a patriarchal society where gender is a barrier to all - girls, eunuchs, and even boys . Girls are expected to be sensitive and emotional. [Personal experience -I am a person who is kind of more comfortable in t-shirt- lower and doesn't like much ifs and buts in appearance. I am bold and confident to express myself. So many of my male classmates consider consider it being 'too open' as a cultured girl]
Everyone has definitely heard about the famous series, Harry Potter by JK Rowling. JK Rowling has revealed she did not use her full name when publishing the first Harry Potter book because she was “paranoid” following a “difficult” marriage. The author previously said she decided against including Joanne – her real name – because the publisher feared an audience of young boys would not want to read books by a woman.
Boys are taught to be masculine and strong ;Since boys are taught to be tough and unfeeling, they feel pressure to hide their emotions .Why does the society ascribe roles based on gender? Why do we fear a role reversal? This is a question to ponder upon a depicted in the 2016 Bollywood movie 'Ki and Ka'.
A girl planning to join the armed forces faces a lot of hindrance, similarly a boy as a dancer. Why do we attach meaning to everything? We talk about liberty but are we still liberal in our approach.
Many people face the negative consequences of our stringent baseless attitudes. For instance in the words of Ginamarie Guarino, "Since boys are taught to be tough and unfeeling, they feel pressure to hide their feminine qualities. They may even reject those qualities entirely, but that does not mean they go away. Their feminine qualities lie dormant in a boy, which results in internal conflict for him."
As long as it doesn't harm anyone, why to oppose? Let's accept people the way they are . Let's not wait for the society to change . As the famous statement goes, " Change yourself ,society will itself change."
Live and let others live .
An entirely different perspective
